Household Tasks – Cleaning out the Fridge

cleaning out the fridge

Keep your fridge sparkling, clean and organised with a weekly clean out. Follow these tips for cleaning out the fridge. The best day to do this is the day before your weekly rubbish collection. You can place out of date and spoiled food directly into the rubbish to be promptly disposed of without stinking up the bins.

Cleaning out the fridge……

If your fridge really needs a good clean and its a few days until your rubbish collection, I suggest placing all the old food and scraps into a plastic rubbish bag and storing it in the fridge until rubbish day. That way you don’t need to put up with rotting smelly food in the bin.

Anyone with pets knows how smelly empty pet food tins can become, let alone the flies they attract. A good idea is to place empty pet food containers into a bag in the fridge instead of placing them straight into the rubbish. Then on your rubbish collection day, simply take the bag and place into the rubbish to be carted away.

Lets get the fridge clean!

Step 1: Have a plastic bag handy to place any out of date or spoiled food items.

Step 2: Fill the sink with warm water and dish washing liquid to clean the shelves. It’s best not to use strong-smelling sprays inside the fridge.

Step 3: Empty all of the contents from the top shelf onto a bench or table. Start at the top of the fridge and work your way down. Any spills or crumbs will fall to the bottom as you clean.

Step 4: Place any unwanted food items into the rubbish bag.

Step 5: Wipe over any containers or packaging containing spills or food crumbs.

Step 6: Wipe the shelf, back and sides of the fridge cavity.

Step 7: Place the items you wish to keep back onto the shelf.

Step 8: Repeat this process for each shelf, any door shelving and the fruit and vegetable containers at the bottom.

Step 9: When you have finished removing all of the out of date and spoiled food from the fridge and all surfaces have been wiped over, give the outside of your fridge a wipe over as well. You can use a damp cloth or stainless steel wipes if they are suitable for your fridge. Don’t forget to give the handles a good clean too.

Step 10: For some added freshness in the fridge place an open box of Bi-carb soda at the back of one of the shelves. The bi-carb will help to absorb any smells in the fridge.

Benefits of a clean and organised fridge……

Giving the fridge a weekly clean out will keep your fridge looking clean and tidy both inside and out. The fridge is the largest appliance in our kitchens so maintaining the outer surface will add to the clean and organised look of the kitchen.

A fridge that is clean and organised makes it much easier to find food items when you need them. Hence, it will be easier to make the weekly shopping list when you can see what items you need with a quick glance inside the fridge. Items can become lost at the back of shelves causing you to over buy at the grocery store as a result of a disorganised fridge.

Whilst you are cleaning out the fridge, if you notice items you regularly use are getting low, add them to the shopping list as you go.

Top Tip……

When doing the weekly grocery shop, stick to the items on your list. In addition, try to avoid buying more than you need or more than you can consume within the use by dates. This will save you money while preventing food wastage.
